Quick Word from Pastor Rob
Loneliness is everywhere. It is one of the most significant problems that people have. People want friends, they need friends. There are many benefits of friendship but there are responsibilities as well. Friendship is a two way street. Proverbs 18:24 has this to say: “A man who has friends must himself be friendly”.
A friend is interested in you. Several things can be said about this. They know you, they trust you, they will help you, they are happy for your success, and they encourage you. When it comes to real friendships quality is more important than quantity. In our social media world many people have hundreds if not thousands of “friends”. But this definition is not the true definition of friendship.
A friend will bring out the best in you. It might be said this way: friends challenge your thinking. You’ve heard the old expression: “He’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer”. One way to overcome this is to have friends who help you to improve. A good scripture on this is Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend”.
A friend loves you. The Bible tells us that love is the greatest virtue. In Proverbs 17:17 we are told that a friend loves at all times. This is the exact opposite of a “fair weather” friend. This kind of love mirrors God’s love for us.
Need a friend? Be a friend!
